Hope International University (HIU) is a private Christian university located in Fullerton, California. It was founded in October 9, 1928 as the Pacific Bible Seminary in its original location in Long Beach. It relocated to its present campus when the original campus was unable to accommodate the growing student population. It became known as the Pacific Christian College upon its transfer. It adapted its present name in 1997 when it achieved university status. Although a non-denominational institution, it has strong ties with the Restoration Movement and the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ.
Hope International University is committed to provide academic programs that are Christ-centered, biblically-based, and Christ-service focused in accordance with the values of the Restoration Movement. It seeks to provide students with a Christian environment that will work to strengthen their faith. It hopes to produce servant leaders in different professions for the purpose of changing the world for Christ. Forming part of its core values are conducting research for the purpose of communicating the Gospel’s relevance and being responsible stewards of resources.
Hope International University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and working adults programs. Most programs have additional accreditations and approvals specific to them such as the Teaching Credentials which are certified by the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing. It is also authorized by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board to grant bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
The academic programs of HIU are provided by its two schools – the Pacific Christian College and the School of Graduate and Professional Studies. The former offers traditional undergraduate programs through its different colleges. The College of Arts and Sciences offers the Associate of Arts; the Bachelor of Arts in English Literature; and the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in various emphases including Communication, Criminal Justice, Customized Concentration, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Pre-Medicine, and Social Science with Concentrations in Human Services or Secondary Education. The College of Business and Management offers the Bachelor of Arts in Business Management or Cross-Cultural Business Administration. The College of Education provides the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies/ Elementary Education Prep. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or Social Science with Child Development Concentration is offered by the College of Psychology and Counseling. The university’s Pacific Christian College of Ministry and Biblical Studies offers the Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, Church Ministry, Children and Family Ministry, Intercultural Studies or Youth and Family Ministry plus the Bachelor of Music in Worship Arts.
The university’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies offers degree programs including the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ministry, and Education Administration; the Master of Business Administration in General Management, International Development, Marketing Management, and Non-Profit Management; Master of Science in Management, and the Master of Education. Credential Programs are likewise offered. Some programs are offered in the online format.
Annual tuition cost for undergraduates is estimated at $23,600.00 for 12 to 17 units per semester. Units beyond 17 are charged $375.00 per unit. Room and board cost ranges from $4,300.00 to $6,300.00 annually. Tuition cost for master’s degree ranges from $385.00 to $595.00 per unit. Financial aid is offered through federal grants, loans, and work study. Students can also avail of low interest loans offered by the university.
Hope International University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Christian College Athletic Association. Its teams known as the Royals participate in the Golden State Athletic Conference and the Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate.
