10 Most Unlikely Christian Converts

There are stories of redemption and finding faith all around us. But some are much easier to believe than others. Take a look at 10 famous people who you might not have expected to embrace Christianity.

1. David Berkowitz, a.k.a. "Son of Sam" or ".44 Caliber Killer"

  • Killed 6, wounded 7 more in 1976-7
  • His sentence would last until the year 2342
  • Got 56 stitches and an 8-inch scar when an inmate slashed his throat in 1979
  • 1989: converted in a complete about-face from Satanism to Christianity, releasing two self-help tapes along the way
  • "I want you to taste the goodness of God in my life, a man who was once a devil worshipper and a murderer, to show you that Jesus Christ is about forgiveness, hope and change."

2. Harry Reems, Former Porn Star

  • Reems was the first male porn star; star of Deep Throat
  • Was paid only $800 for the film--though it grossed $600 million
  • Raised Jewish
  • Was an Equity contract member of the National Shakespeare Company when his porn career began
  • "If I didn't put God in my life, I'd be dead now. I am not religious. I'm spiritual, 100 percent."

3. Insane Clown Posse, Controversial Rap Group

  • ICP deserves to make the list for unlikely faith, but they actually aren't converts--they were covert Christians!
  • Joseph Bruce, a.k.a. Violent J, and Joseph Utsler, a.k.a. Shaggy 2 Dope, spouted rap with offensive language and messages for two decades
  • Lyrics like "Barrels in your mouth/Bullets to your head/The back of your neck's all over the shed" don't exactly scream "I trust in God"...
  • ...But lyrics like this tell a different story: "**** it, we got to tell/All secrets will now be told/No more hidden messages/Truth is we follow GOD ... We're not sorry if we tricked you"

4. Brian "Head" Welch, Former Korn Guitarist

  • Quietly endured discomfort at his band's lifestyle for years
  • Baptized in the Jordan River, Israel, two weeks after announcing his separation from Korn
  • Produced some of his own music and asked former bandmates to consider producing it--but it was not well-received
  • Now in solo project, Love and Death
  • "It's not about religion. It's not about this church; it's not about me. It's about the Book of Life, and everybody needs to be taught this."

  • Stage props included guillotines, electric chairs, boa constrictors, dolls...
  • Believed politics/religion shouldn't be mixed with rock, so he kept his faith to himself
  • Recovering alcoholic since the '80s
  • Also a fan of golf
  • Married to ballerina Sheryl Goddard since 1976, after a brief separation during the height of his alcoholism
  • "Maybe the most shocking thing about Alice Cooper is that I am Christian."

  • Once named "Most Powerful Person in Porn" by Arena magazine
  • The Hustler club and magazine entrepreneur converted after supposedly getting a vision from God while piloting his private jet
  • 5 marriages
  • Evangelical Christian in 1977, thanks to Jimmy Carter's sister Ruth Carter Stapleton
  • His faith lasted 1 year
  • Daughter Tonya Flynt-Vega is a Christian anti-pornography activist; Flynt has disowned her
  • "You've got to understand that I was an atheist. Then I became a Christian. Then I became a born-again Christian, and now I have become a Christian patriot. And all that happened in a two-week period."

7. Bettie Page, Former Pin-Up/Sex Symbol

  • An icon of the post-WWII era
  • Launched into the modeling world in the '50s--but by 1957 she was ready to exit
  • Afterward, she denied her identity when people would ask
  • Over 20,000 photographs were taken of her
  • 1959: she walked into a church in Key West, thus beginning her born-again Christianity
  • Refused to be photographed in her old age
  • "Being in the nude isn't a disgrace unless you`re being promiscuous about it. After all, when God created Adam and Eve, they were stark naked. And in the Garden of Eden, God was probably naked as a jaybird too!"

8. Norma McCorvey, a.k.a. "Jane Roe" of Roe v. Wade

  • After fighting the state of Texas and eventually the federal government for the legal right to abortions, McCorvey changed positions
  • 28-year advocacy of abortion ended when she converted to Christianity, became pro-life
  • Baptized in 1995
  • Founded "Roe No More Ministry" in 1997
  • Converted to Catholicism 1998
  • "I'm being true to myself and that is all that matters to me and God."

9. Gary Busey, Actor

  • Busey identifies as Christian, but his spirituality isn't limited to one religion
  • Converted after a felony drug arrest in 1995
  • Participated in "Celebrity Wife Swap" with former evangelical pastor Ted Haggard
  • Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2012 with $500,000 in personal debts
  • "I want Charlie to get up out of the mud and reclaim his life and I'm praying for him."

10. Charlie Sheen, Actor

  • Self-admitted to drug and alcohol rehab in 1990
  • Witness in trial of Heidi Fleiss, 1995; admitting to ordering 27 call girls at a total of $50,000
  • Declared finding God in 1996 after divorce from model Donna Peel
  • However, more drugs and scandal have plagued him since, including some very public manic appearances in 2011
  • (In fact, he hosted the 12th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos--an ICP event--in August of 2011!)
